For several months now my various versions of Windows 10 will not automatically download a smartcard driver (MiniDriver) from Windows Update. This is a problem that has been reported from various customers as well. I have installed a lot of different smart card drivers, but nothing works. The card reader software recognizes the card and reads it properly, but when I try to authenticate with it, it displays this message.
In Windows the smart card reader is not being detected and doesn't show up in Windows device manager (with the card inserted or not), the driver 1.9.17.2321 Rev.A "Alcor Micro Smart Card Reader Drive" is installed. This I have tried to resolve the issue. - Reseat the ribbon cables from both ends. Everytime you put a smartcard on a contactless reader, or in a contact reader, the system tries to locate the appropriate driver, and this generally ends up with a red mark in the tray bar and this annoying message in the tray bar : “Device driver software was not successfully installed.
